NOVA Chemicals Enhances the Use of Recycled Polyethylene Through Advanced Compounding Technologies

NOVA Chemicals is working to address the common limitations of mechanical recycling, such as polymer degradation and contamination, which often restrict recycled plastic to lower-tier products. By developing new polymer designs and specialty formulations, NOVA seeks to enable the use of recycled polyethylene (rPE) in high-performance applications. This project aims to promote a circular economy while positioning Alberta as a global leader in recycling and upcycling.

By leveraging its expertise in polyethylene production and its new mechanical recycling facility, NOVA Chemicals, with support from Emissions Reduction Alberta, is investing in specialized R&D equipment and strategic partnerships. These efforts will help establish the first Recycling Innovation Cluster in Alberta to commercialize solutions that meet the strict requirements of high-tier products. Ultimately, this work helps customers increase the recycled content in their packaging, supporting both their sustainability goals and evolving regulatory requirements.
